“We know instinctively that not everything we come to believe as history is true. But we want it to be.”
Gwen Ifill explores the untold stories of Rosa Parks, who would have turned 100-years-old this week, before and after the bus boycott of 1955. She talked with Jeanne Theoharis whose book, “The Rebellious Life of Mrs. Rosa Parks” brings to light moments of Parks’ life, not in the history books. Watch the interview here.

A little of this I knew, but there was a lot here I did not know. — tanya b.

Jeanne Theoharis is the sister of Prof. George Theoharis, and visited the SOE a couple of years ago as part of our Landscape of Urban Education Lecture Series. Congratulations on this important new book!

I noticed this sign as I was walking into the restaurant tonight. This restaurant at maximum capacity would still not have held as many passengers as a boxcar in Germany, yet the boxcar would have been about the size of three tables put together.

Isn’t it interesting how words as simple as this can pack such a huge punch? This proverb inspires me to reflect on what my expectations are, for children I work with.
What level of understanding (Bloom’s Taxomony) am I fostering and assessing? Am I being purposeful in establishing ways to involve children in THEIR learning and THEIR surroundings?
With this new year comes new resolutions. My resolution is to be more reflective about my expectations for my students and more active in finding ways to work with families, therapists, schools, and each child to construct learning that reaches higher levels of understanding.
